The Transforming Power of The Gospel: A Tale of Three Children's Homes

More than a week ago, in our church, we hosted about 5 missionaries from out of State.  Like any short term missionaries in any country, we had to accompany them to the places they were going to minister at.  Their visit was very short; only five days.  But we got to visit 3 different Children's Homes on three different days.  The comparison for the three Children's Homes was very notable and amazing.  It was actually one of our highlights - for all of us - both guests and hosts.  The reason for the difference?  Well, you will find out soon.

Children's Home 1
The first Children's we visited was in Baba Ndogo.  It had about 78 children - a few of whom were away in boarding schools.  The Home is being run by a couple who are born again Christians and very devoted to the children.  To them, raising those children is not only an honor but a calling from God.  From the first impression, we noted some major needs one being space.  Imagine 78 children crammed up into 3 bedrooms the size that can only accommodate 3 bunk beds and leaves room for nothing else.  But the impressive thing is that the children were clean and the place was generally clean.  When we interacted with the children, it was easy to control them.  They were well behaved and we had a smooth time of interaction - telling them bible stories, singing with them and presenting small toys to them.  When we told them to queue for the toys, they did not have any trouble and once each received a toy, they were content and didn't feel the need to go asking for more toys or for a different kind of toy.

Children's Home 2
The second Children's Home we visited the next day was in Eastleigh.  There were about 80 to 100 children who were being raised by a Muslim woman.  She is a devout Muslim and we even tried to share the word of God with her.  But just like they say, if you want to know about the home you look at the children, they really did paint a vivid picture in our minds.  First off, our time of interaction and games was not easy.  We had to change different games half way because they were just not working.  We get not get them to follow instructions or even get them to listen in the first place.  When it came to handing them gifts, we had trouble having them stay in the queue and those who got gifts came back for more.  One even told me that he stole a gift from his friend.  Talk of aggressive, they were in every way a children can be.  The home also had limited space like the first one but this one was smelly (I will not go into the details of this).

Children's Home 3
The third Children's Home we visited was in Kabete and it was a government run Home where staff and volunteers worked in shifts.  That means that the children there did not have someone who is constantly there for them throughout.  This definitely reflected on the children as some of the younger children needed a diaper change but no one had bothered to change them.  We visited in the evening and it was when the night staff were just about to get in for the shift and the evening staff were about to leave.  It was clear that the staff did not have any religious inclinations but were just government staff who were trying to do "the right thing".   But to an outsider, "the right thing" could mean something totally different.  In terms of space, this home adequate space and it was clean but the children were "smelly".  It is sad but that is the truth.  When we gave them the gifts, they were well behaved and most were content with whatever gift they received.  But we had trouble consoling one child who was weeping because they wanted a different kind of gift.

In Conclusion, no home can be perfect and that includes regular homes with a father and mother.  But there is a big difference that Christ can make.  We saw it and we experienced it with our own eyes.

Therefore, pray:-

  • That the children in Home 1 will continue to know, love and become like Jesus Christ.
  • That the children in Home 2 and 3 will encounter Christ and those around them will also come to the saving knowledge of Jesus.

Core Combat Eldoret: Whoever Serves Me Must Follow Me

Core Combat is an initiative of The Navigators Eldoret and Western to train students to become laborers.  Our theme for this year was John 12:26 which says (let me see if I can quote it from memory), "Whoever serves me must follow me.  And where I am my servant also will be.  My Father will honor the one who serves me."

Here I was leading a study on "Devotions or Devotion"and
we learnt that God wants us to focus on "the one thing"
Psalm 27:4.
We spent the first half of the time getting ourselves heavily into the scriptures, prayer and fellowship.  We learnt to work together as team and do chores together.  We did everything for ourselves - cooking, cleaning, washing clothes, fetching water and firewood.  Some of us did some things we are not used to doing or never did before.  For some like me it was washing clothes in a flowing river and for others it was either reading ten chapters of the bible a day, memorizing scripture or cooking on three stones.  Hence Core Combat.  They says pictures speak louder than words, so enjoy the slide show or not!

Going to the river to fetch water.

On the right, you see me with a can and a friend fetching water.  The river was not very far but it was a long distance enough for us to review between 5 to 12 verses on the Topical Memory System (TMS).  The TMS is a simple, easy-to-use tool developed by The Navigators to help believers memorize key verses that point to basic truths and important instruction.  The one we are currently using has only 60 verses that are grouped into 5 (12 verses in each group).  One of my highlights was memorizing the verses in the evenings and there are some verses we had to repeat soo many times because some unnamed individuals kept adding things that were not there or removing others like an "S" or "the".  We laughed so hard it took us an hour or so to memorize 12 verses word perfect and share what we heard God speaking to us from the verses and praying back those thoughts back to God.

You see I am tryin to keep the fire burning.
It was our turn to prepare dinner.

Time to prepare dinner was not only time to bond as we showcased our "good cooking skills" :-) but it was also time to catch up on our scripture memory and bible reading.  On the left, you can see Paul seating in the background (he was not feeling well) but he read 10 chapters for us from the book of Mark while Njoro and I prepared dinner.  On other days, while our group fetched water, another group listened to the audio bible while making chapatis.  They did not employ the services of Paul to read for them....ha ha.

It was fun to wash clothes in a flowing river  for the first time in my life.

Some fun & adventure!!!

Ministering at Sirodha Primary School in Sirembe.  Almost the
entire school (Class 4-8) prayed to receive Christ.
Ministering at Ndegwe Seconday school.  About 7 students
committed their lives to Christ.

Relaxing in Sirembe after an afternoon of ministry.
On our way to Church on Sunday.

A friend I met at Church.  She taught me
a few Luo words.

In Church in Sirembe after the service.  We were fed like kings
and queens.  It was such a nice meal that you can even see from
our faces.

Waiting for a Matatu to Kisumu in Kodiaga.
We got to Kodiaga from Sirembe on
motorbikes.

In short, whoever serves Our Lord Jesus Christ, the same must follow Christ.
We must follow Christ in obedience to the great commission he has entrusted to us.  And we also follow him as we seek to become more like him.  Eventually, as we spend time with the one we love, we become more like him.  We become like him in the area of character and how we respond to pain and suffering.

Holy Spirit Moments: Is The Lord With You?

"One of them said he knew a young fellow in Bethlehem, the son of a man named Jesse, who was not only a talented harp player, but was handsome, brave, and strong, and had good, solid judgment. “What’s more,” he added, “the Lord is with him.” " 1 Samuel 16:18(TLB)

We had door-to-door evangelism at Kenya Science today and we reached two girls who were already born again.   We encouraged them and prayed with them.   One thing that was very clear like with so many believers today,  is the fact that they lack discipleship.   We have a lot of converts but very few disciples yet the mandate Jesus Christ left us is to make disciples of all nations.   Please pray that these students will be rooted and grounded in the Lord.

On my way home,  in the bus, I sat next to the driver like it has become my custom.   I had sincerely not planned to share the gospel with the driver or the passenger on my left side.   So after exchanging pleasantries, I took out my phone to continue with my Systematic Bible Reading.   I had finished 1 Samuel chapter 15 earlier and was to start on chapter 16.

But little did I know that the Holy Spirit was setting me up to preach to the two guys.   I heard him say,  "ask them if you could read out the chapter to them."   I wanted to ignore the voice but I had read the previous chapter where Saul disobeyed the Lord and we all know the consequences -  he was rejected as king.

I then decided to go with the "flow" of the Holy Spirit.  So we read the chapter and the Holy Spirit had me focus on the profile of David as a leader God chose to replace Saul.   He zeroed in on verse 18 (quoted above) that the Lord was with David and tied it with psalm 23.  As I alighted at my stage/destination the Holy Spirit had me ask Mohammed and Symo whether the Lord is with them.

So pray that:-
  • Mohammed and Symo will seriously ponder on that question and that they will desire a relationship with the Lord like that of David and the Lord.
  • The Lord will guide me to many more souls that He wants me to share the gospel with.

God's Incomparably Great Power

As I was reading Ephesians 1 today, these thoughts came to mind and I felt like sharing with you.  I pray it will bless you.

Verse:
And his incomparably great power for us who believe. That power is like the working of his mighty strength, which he exerted in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly realms... Ephesians 1:19-20

Reflection:
Isn't amazing that God has made His incomparably great power available to us who believe?  I can't imagine how the working of God's mighty strength might feel like or looks like.  But he gives us a glimpse of it.  He said it is the same power that accomplished two things for Christ Jesus:-

1. It raised Christ from the dead.  That speaks of purpose.  It speaks of an assignment.  So if we have that same power, then we are able to accomplish the purposes for which God called us to.  We are able to do what he sent us to do.  We have no reason to be sloppy or lazy because the power is available.  If that power raised Jesus from the dead, then I am not sure what it cannot do.  Whether I am called to preach the gospel, or to be a doctor or a teacher or an army officer, the same power that raised Christ from the dead is available to me.

2.  It seated Christ at the right hand of God in the heavenly realms.  That speaks of position.  It speaks of identity.  Ephesians 2:6 says that "And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus".  So the same position that God's incomparably great power put Jesus, is that same position it put us.  At God's right hand.  That is "far above all rule and authority, power and dominion, and every title that can be given, not only in the present age but also in the one to come." Ephesians 1:21.  That is just unbelievable.  Wow!

So I ask myself these two questions:-

1.  What is my purpose and am I tapping into the power that is available to me in Christ to accomplish it?
2.  As I walk through life, am I walking as one who knows my position?  One who knows how strategically placed I am?

Prayer
- Father, thank you for revealing your purpose for my life to me.  Help me to tap into that incomparably great power that is available to me in Christ Jesus to accomplish your purposes for my life.

- Lord, thank you for your son Jesus Christ who through him you have made me sit with him in the heavenly realms.  I pray that you will help me to walk in awareness of my position at all times.  Help me to live my life not only in view of eternity but also as one who is strategically placed - far above all rule and authority.  Open my eyes to know this INCOMPARABLY GREAT POWER that is available for me who believes, in Jesus name.
